Mayor, Cr Jason Schram today officially launched a new automated multi-rip timber re-saw system at CMTP in Colac, on behalf of Dan Tehan, Member for Wannon.
The project received $500,000 in funding from the Australian Government under the Regional Jobs and Investment Packages programme, with CMTP providing the remaining $810,000 towards the project.
The new saw system will enable CMTP to produce thin boards not currently available by the major sawmills. The system will allow the company to cut customised non-standard sizing, suitable for both domestic and export markets.
Customers of pallets demand reliability, durability, and quality and the new saw will enable the provision of a secure supply of pallet material that is free from sawdust contamination.
Mr Tehan said “the project had secured further jobs in Colac with employment security for the existing forty staff and will create another fifteen jobs. Existing employees are also able to be retrained to higher-level career opportunities”.
The Morrison Government’s $500,000 investment in industrial infrastructure has provided long term benefits to the Colac region.
“In addition to benefiting the local community by creating flow-on effects to local employers, this investment will also produce long-term benefits to the region as it will grow new local and export markets by guaranteeing a high-quality, contamination-free product,” Mr Tehan said.
Mr Travis Meade, Managing Director, CMTP, said “that the’ funding had enabled our business to increase in scale and capability, which in turn has driven the growth of our organisation. It has not only created new jobs but also boosted the skills and knowledge of our current workforce”.
“This project has improved safety for the staff due to reduced manual handling of timber, and that’s a win for everyone”, said Mr Meade.
Mr Tehan said “ that this project further built on the success of CMTP, having been recognised in the 2019 Colac Otway Business Awards as Business of the Year, Business Person of the Year and Excellence in Manufacturing, Construction and Rural.
