Towns in Wannon, including Lexton and Beaufort, have warned of a shortage of sticking plaster and energy drinks as a team of fundraisers running from Canberra to Warrnambool pass through.
The group of runners embarked on the nearly 1,000-kilometre relay run to raise money to fight Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (CJD). CJD is a rare and serious disease that causes the brain to degenerate, leading to dementia and death. In Australia, around one person out of a million will develop CJD each year.
Member for Wannon Dan Tehan is taking part in the run to honour his mother, Marie, who passed away due to CJD in 2004.
“My mother remains a great inspiration to me, and I miss her every day,” Mr Tehan said.
“She was a Victorian state parliamentarian who taught me the importance of fighting for what you believe in and serving your community.
“All of us taking part in this run have lost family members or friends to this cruel disease, and that’s why we are helping to raise money and awareness to break down the stigma attached.
“If you want to support our effort, you donate via our GoFundMe page to raise much-needed funds to help with research and assist in clinical trials.”
