LABOR’S CAR TAX WILL ADD THOUSANDS TO THE PRICE OF A NEW CAR

Labor’s carbon tax on new vehicles will add thousands of dollars to the cost of a new car as Wannon families struggle with the cost of living.

Under Labor’s new tax, the cost of 4WDs, utilities and SUVs will increase by up to $13,250, according to research by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries. Labor’s car tax will hit Wannon families the hardest because people living in regional communities rely on 4WDs, SUVs and utilities for work and personal use.

Member for Wannon Dan Tehan said Wannon residents buying popular petrol, diesel and hybrid models would be penalised so as Labor could subsidise the cost of electric vehicles, which are mostly driven in the capital cities.

“Wannon families who rely on SUVs and 4WDS to run their farms and businesses or to ferry the kids to school, sport and other activities are being penalised so Labor can make electric cars cheaper for inner city voters.

“As local families struggle with the cost of living, housing shortages and huge rent hikes, Labor is adding thousands onto the cost of most new cars.

“This is an irresponsible decision made at the wrong time and it will have a negative impact on rural and regional communities.

"Labor needs to find a better way to reduce emissions that doesn’t hurt Wannon families.” Labor’s car tax has been criticised by the Australian Automobile Association, Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and the Australian Automotive Dealers Association.
