I have two questions for readers which merit serious reflection.
Do you feel better off after two years under Labor?
Do you feel safer after two years under Labor?
Let’s look at the facts.
Cost of living
As the Reserve Bank Governor said, Australia’s inflation is largely ‘homegrown,’ meaning the financial stress that Wannon residents are feeling is the result of Labor’s economic mismanagement.
Australia’s inflation is higher than almost every major advanced economy. Housing is up 12%, rents are up 12%, insurance is up 26%, electricity is up 18% and gas is up 25%. Higher inflation means high interest rates.
There have been 12 interest rate rises under Labor. Yet in the 2024-25 Budget, Labor added $315 billion of new spending at a time when we desperately needed restraint to lower interest rates. The numbers don’t lie.
Under Labor, Wannon families are worse off. Labor’s ‘fresh food’ tax will be introduced on 1 July. It is an attack on both farmers and families and will cause groceries prices to rise yet again at the checkout.
Anthony Albanese’s Labor Government is also proceeding with the ban on live sheep exports.
The news has caused sheep and lamb prices to plummet right across the country, adding further pressure to Wannon farmers already struggling with the cost of living crisis and near-drought conditions.
Labor allowed just one week for submissions to an inquiry into the phase out of the live sheep export trade and requested the committee report back in just over two weeks’ time, by 21 June.
It’s not possible for Labor’s committee to fully investigate the consequences of phasing out the live sheep export trade in such a short timeframe. This is another example of Labor treating our farmers with contempt.
Community safety
Last year, the Government released 153 criminals into the community, including child sex offenders and murderers.
This was a result of being caught flat-footed by a High Court decision, without legislation ready to fix the problem. At least 30 of these criminals have since been charged for new offences, including the brutal assault of a grandmother in her own home.
Among his many other proven failures, just last week the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Andrew Giles, was caught out speaking to the media about a drone surveillance programme for detainees that did not exist.
Labor’s unacceptable failures on community safety are putting innocent Australians at risk. So, are you better off and are you safer after two years under Labor’s watch? Sadly, I expect the answer on both counts is ‘no.’
