LABOR'S HYPOCRISY OVER ASYLUM SEEKER CRISIS

Home / Shadow Ministry / LABOR'S HYPOCRISY OVER ASYLUM SEEKER CRISIS

Before the last election, Labor claimed that people smugglers had changed their business model and were exporting vulnerable people to Australia by plane.

Labor called the number of asylum seekers arriving by plane a “crisis” and said criminal syndicates were forcing people into modern-day slavery in Australia.

Since Labor was elected, 14,645 asylum seekers have arrived by plane, and Labor have no plan to deal with this problem. The number of asylum seekers arriving in Australia by plane continues to increase every month under the Labor Government, reaching 1786 in March, according to the most recent data from Home Affairs.

More than 101,000 asylum seekers now arrive by plane in Australia. In opposition, Labor said the government needed to address asylum seekers arriving by plane, so where is their plan?

Labor was happy to use asylum seekers to score points against the Coalition, but their lack of action in government demonstrates they never really cared. Labor was a say-anything opposition and was a do-nothing government. They are all hat and no cattle on immigration. They talk about a good game but have no plan for taking action to address this problem or any other issue.

Here is what Labor’s Immigration spokeswoman Kristina Keneally said about asylum seekers arriving by plane when Labor was in opposition:

  • “(The Home Affairs Minister) is overseeing a system that has blown out when it comes to the arrival of asylum seekers at our airports,” 18 October 2019.
  • “What this represents is criminal syndicates and illegitimate labour-hire companies are trafficking people into the country to work and to work often in exploitative conditions, those close to slavery,” 13 October 2019.
  • “This Government has failed to notice that the people smugglers have changed their business model from boats to planes,” 9 October 2019.
  • “If a government is serious about stopping a flow of people coming to Australia, then it would be doing something about aeroplane arrivals,” 19 September 2019.
