Small business

Small businesses and their employees are the backbone of our communities and the lifeblood of our regional economy. They create local jobs, back our sporting clubs and community organisations, and play a vital role in ensuring our towns continue to thrive.

Across Wannon, I regularly meet business owners who are working harder than ever just to keep their doors open. The pressures of rising costs, interest rates and energy prices along with endless red tape are making it tougher to invest, grow and employ local people.

Small businesses and their workers deserve a government that rewards enterprise, not one that stands in the way of success.

That’s why the Coalition is committed to backing small businesses and their employees. We will repeal Labor’s new taxes on small business, investment, housing and inheritances, make the $50,000 instant asset write-off permanent, cut unnecessary red tape and ensure small businesses have a stronger voice in government.

But good policy starts by listening.

Over the coming weeks I’ll be hosting a series of small business roundtables across Wannon to hear directly from business owners and operators about the challenges they’re facing and the practical reforms needed to help them succeed.

These roundtables will help shape the Coalition’s proposed Small Business Act and ensure the realities of doing business in regional Australia are heard loud and clear in Canberra.

If you own a small business, I encourage you to complete my small business survey at this link: http://lbr.al/jnx8 and register your interest in attending a roundtable by contacting my office on T | 1300 131 692 or E | dan.tehan.mp@aph.gov.au.

Your ideas and experiences are invaluable in helping build policies that support investment, create jobs and strengthen our local economy.

My First Speech competition

With school holidays underway, I encourage local students to make the most of the break by entering a national competition that celebrates the next generation of leaders.

I’m pleased to once again support the House of Representatives’ My First Speech Competition for students in Years 10, 11 and 12. The competition invites students to imagine they’ve just been elected to Parliament and write a three-minute first speech on an issue they’re passionate about.

Whether it’s agriculture, cost-of-living pressures, education, the environment or the future of regional Australia, this is a wonderful opportunity for young people to have their voices heard while learning more about our democracy.

The competition offers an expenses-paid trip to Parliament House in Canberra for one winner from each year level, along with a prize pack. I know Wannon has many talented students who would be excellent ambassadors for our region.

Entries close on 20 July, so I encourage eligible students to put pen to paper and enter. I look forward to seeing the ideas, passion and leadership our young people have to offer.

For more information about the My First Speech Competition, please contact my office on T | 1300 131 692 or E | dan.tehan.mp@aph.gov.au.
