New Consumer Price Index (CPI) data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics is further evidence Australians will never receive Labor’s promised $275 power bill cut.

According to the latest CPI data, released yesterday, electricity prices are up more than 22 per cent in a year. In Melbourne alone, electricity prices rose by 22.1 per cent over the past year. 

Under Labor, more than 244,000 Australians are on energy hardship programs, the highest level of energy poverty on record. 

Shadow Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction Dan Tehan said Labor’s botched Net Zero rollout was driving up energy prices for Australian families. 

“Chris Bowen’s insulting ‘victory lap’ earlier this week over wholesale electricity prices was a kick in the guts to Australians struggling to pay their energy bills,” Mr Tehan said.

“The CPI data does not lie: Australians are paying more for their energy bills under Labor and they will never receive their promised $275 power bill cut.

“Labor’s Net Zero obsession, with delays and blowouts as far as the eye can see, is putting further pressure on inflation as the government spends money hand over fist – the so-called Cheaper Home Batteries Program has alone gone from a $2.3 billion to $8.5 billion financial disaster.

“By contrast, the Coalition’s plan will deliver cheaper power by scrapping Net Zero and unlocking Australia’s critical resources, making them work for us.”
