For more than a century, Australians have served our nation in times of war and in peacekeeping missions around the world, helping to protect the freedoms we hold dear.
ANZAC Day is a time when we come together to remember them.
It marks the landing at Gallipoli in 1915, when thousands of Australian and New Zealand troops set foot on distant shores. Many never returned, and their courage and sacrifice have shaped our national story ever since.
The spirit they showed — of courage, mateship and service — has been carried forward by generations who followed, from the Western Front to World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan and peacekeeping missions across the globe.
This year, we reflect on 25 years since Australia’s involvement in Afghanistan, and 75 years since the introduction of National Service.
We remember the ‘Nashos’ who put their lives on hold to serve, including those who were sent to Vietnam, and acknowledge the impact that service had not just on them, but on their families as well.
ANZAC Day is not just about history. It is about people. It is about those who served, those who continue to serve, and the families and communities who stand beside them.
We pause to honour their sacrifice, to reflect on the cost of service, and to give thanks for the peace and freedoms we enjoy today.
