Chris Bowen fails to give safety guarantee on home batteries

Today in Question Time, the Minister for Climate Change and Energy refused to guarantee that every battery system installed under the Albanese Labor Government’s $8.5 billion Cheaper Home Batteries Program had been installed safely and in compliance with technical requirements.

Despite more than 500,000 batteries being installed under this program to date, only 3,425 safety inspections have been conducted as of 30 June 2026.

Of those inspected batteries, 62 per cent have been found to be sub-standard.

The Opposition is calling on Chris Bowen to:

  1. Pause the rollout.
  2. Establish an independent inquiry.
  3. Launch a comprehensive safety audit.
