Federal Member for Wannon Dan Tehan has urged residents, farmers and backyard poultry owners to remain vigilant following confirmation that the H5N1 strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza (bird flu) has been detected in a wild bird at Portland.
Mr Tehan said the confirmation by the CSIRO that H5N1 is spreading among wild birds in southern Australia was a significant development that reinforced the importance of maintaining Australia’s strong biosecurity systems.
“The detection of bird flu in one wild bird in Portland underlines the importance of remaining vigilant but it is vital people understand there is currently no evidence that H5N1 has entered Australia’s commercial poultry industry or broader agricultural production systems,” Mr Tehan said.
“Wannon is home to a world-class agricultural sector and protecting our food security must remain a national priority.”
Mr Tehan urged anyone who discovers a sick or dead bird not to handle it.
“We’re fortunate to have some of Australia’s most spectacular coastline and birdlife here in Wannon. Many locals and visitors enjoy spending time along our beaches, estuaries and coastal reserves, so it’s important everyone knows what to do if they come across a sick or dead bird.
“If you find a sick or dead bird or other animal, do not touch it or get too close. Keep children and pets away, record the location and, if it is safe to do so, take a photograph or video before reporting it immediately to the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
“Early reporting is one of the best ways we can help monitor the spread of the virus and protect our native wildlife, poultry industry and regional communities.”
Mr Tehan said eggs and poultry remained safe to eat when properly handled and thoroughly cooked in accordance with normal food safety practices.
Mr Tehan thanked the veterinarians, scientists, biosecurity officers, wildlife experts and frontline personnel working around the clock to monitor and respond to the evolving situation.
“I want to acknowledge the outstanding work being done by the people on the frontline of Australia’s biosecurity system. Their expertise, dedication and rapid response are helping protect our agricultural industries, our unique wildlife and regional communities.
He said the Coalition would continue working constructively with governments, industry and biosecurity experts to ensure Australia’s strong biosecurity framework remained fit for purpose.
