Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan, today joined members of the Warrnambool Cycling Club to congratulate them on their successful application under the Stronger Communities Programme.
Warrnambool Cycling Club applied for $15,862 in Round 8 of the Stronger Communities Programme to install a public-use bike stand that will include a drinking fountain and bottle refill station.
Mr Tehan said, “the Warrnambool Cycling Club plays an important role in providing recreation services to community members and visitors to Warrnambool and surrounds, and it is wonderful to provide funding that continues to support their activities.”
“I congratulate the Warrnambool Cycling Club and its volunteers on recognising the importance of increasing bike riding participation in our community and keeping our bike riders safe by submitting this worthwhile project”, said Mr Tehan.
The Stronger Communities Programme is a vital program that supports our local community groups and assists with small capital projects that contribute to building vibrant and viable communities, said Mr Tehan.
Unfortunately, in this year’s Labor Government budget papers, I have confirmed that this wonderful community program has been terminated.
This is devastating news once again as our rural and regional communities bear the brunt of Labor’s razor gang and is on top of the recently announced road funding budget cuts.
In Wannon, over 150 community projects have been funded through the programme, and I am disheartened that groups such as Warrnambool Cycling Club no longer have this funding opportunity.
That is why in the Coalition’s Budget Reply, the Opposition Leader announced policies that will strengthen our society and our local communities, including programmes such as the Stronger Communities Programme.
