Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan, is delighted to host the 2023 Wannon Sport and Volunteer Awards at a ceremony on Friday 20 October in Mortlake.
“The Wannon Sport and Volunteer Awards provide the opportunity for not only me but the community to express our gratitude and thanks to our recipients but also inspire others to take up the opportunities”, said Mr Tehan.
Joining Mr Tehan at the Sport Awards Ceremony as special guests are Poppy Myers and Eve Covey. Both athletes are local Wannon talent who both play representative hoops for Warrnambool and have recently played for Vic Country at the Basketball Australia Under 16 National Championships in Perth.
The morning ceremony will celebrate Wannon athletes, coaches and sporting clubs for their outstanding commitment or achievements in sport.
Mr Tehan said he would recognise over thirty-three recipients in the Sport Awards, from participants, volunteers, and supporters.
“More than winning, participating in sport helps to build our communities, provides confidence, and a feeling of belonging, connection, and shared experiences. These awards provide an excellent opportunity to recognise and celebrate the achievements of our sporting community and the contribution sport makes to Wannon, said Mr Tehan.
The afternoon will see Mr Tehan hosting the Volunteer Awards, with guest speaker Mick Murphy OAM sharing his insights and experience as a recognised Mortlake community member for outstanding achievement and service to the community.
Mr Tehan said “that these awards are a very special event in my calendar, as they allow me to thank the community and show my appreciation.
“The Volunteer Awards are an opportunity to recognise the volunteers and show them how much I value their contribution to the community through their volunteering. It is also a fabulous opportunity to showcase volunteers' great work in our community, said Mr Tehan.
“This year, I had a tremendous number of applications, and I was delighted to read about the individuals and groups who have inspired and promoted the spirit of volunteerism, who, through their time and effort, have helped make our local community a better place.
