Labor's immigration failure

Home / Media Releases / Shadow Ministry / Labor's immigration failure

Labor has once again been forced to raise their migration target because of their Big Australia policy.

In today’s MYEFO, Labor has raised their Net Overseas Migration (NOM) forecast by 80,000 migrants, to 340,000 up from 260,000.

The increased immigration forecast is now at odds with the Prime Minister’s own commitment that his Labor Government would deliver immigration of 260,000 this year.

Does Prime Minister Albanese stand by his statements? Who can Australians believe: the Prime Minister or the Treasurer?

Labor has consistently overshot their migration forecasts because of their failure to manage immigration.

Australians have no confidence that Labor can achieve their immigration target this time.

Labor’s Big Australia has led to record numbers of immigrant arrivals, as Australians live through a housing crisis and a cost-of-living crisis.

The Prime Minister still can’t answer the most important question: where will all these people live?

With fewer first home buyers, rapidly rising rents and fewer homes being built, it’s outrageous that Labor remains determined to run a massive migration program in support of their policy for a ‘Big Australia’.

In contrast, the Coalition will reduce migration and free up more than 100,000 homes for Australians over five years to alleviate Labor’s housing crisis.

Labor’s Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has his priorities wrong. He has been more focussed on bringing Palestinians to Australia on tourist visas then deporting failed asylum seekers or cracking down on people abusing the visa system.

A Coalition Government will cut permanent migration from 185,000 to 140,000 immediately on coming to office.

We will also reduce the humanitarian intake from 20,000 under Labor back to the long-term average of 13,750.

In addition, we will reduce international student numbers at major metropolitan universities to better reflect housing and infrastructure challenges.

Labor has no credibility on managing migration.

That is why the Coalition has a realistic plan to reduce migration, lower than Labor, based on the mess we inherit.
