Labor tries to bury its population in bad news

Home / Media Releases / Shadow Ministry / Labor tries to bury its population in bad news

The Albanese Labor Government has attempted to hide more immigration bad news from the Australian people by dumping it out on the Friday afternoon before Christmas.

The 2024 Population Statement published today confirms that 109,500 migrants in two years have extended their stay in Australia when they were expected to leave under Labor.

Labor has no plans to deal with record immigration as Australians struggle with a housing crisis and a cost-of-living crisis.

Today’s Population Statement gives Labor a hat-trick of official figures that demonstrate the mess Labor has made with their Big Australia policy.

In MYEFO this week, Labor raised their Net Overseas Migration (NOM) forecast by 80,000 migrants, to 340,000 up from 260,000. The increased immigration forecast is now at odds with the Prime Minister’s own commitment that his Labor Government would deliver immigration of 260,000.

The ABS last week confirmed almost one million migrants have arrived in just two years under the Albanese Labor Government as Australians struggle through a housing crisis, with 445,600 migrants arriving in Financial Year 2023-24.

Labor doesn't like talking about immigration and their Big Australia.

They don’t have an answer to the most important question: where will all these people live?

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese won’t say if he stands by his commitment that his Labor Government would deliver immigration of 260,000.

  • “We're busy restoring the system so that it will come down to 260,000 in the next financial year,” Albanese, ABC Sydney Drive, 20/5/24.
  • “We'll halve numbers down to 260,000 in the coming financial year,” Albanese, ABC Brisbane Drive, 23/5/24.

The number of asylum seekers in the country broke the 120,000-mark last month under Labor.

Annual international student enrolments have passed one million for the first time, under Labor.

This Labor Government bragged about how many visas it was processing. They boasted about ramping up activity to “accelerate processing times”.

Labor always makes a mess out of immigration.
