Improved rail access for western Victoria

Home / Election commitments / Media Releases / Improved rail access for western Victoria

An elected Dutton Coalition Government will save $4.2 billion by scrapping federal funding for the Suburban Rail Loop and the gold-plated upgrade for Sunshine Station it would have required.

Every dollar of that $4.2 billion saved will be reinvested into Victoria road and rail projects.

In the first of many announcements about how this money will be redirected, the Coalition announced today it will increase federal funding for Melbourne Airport Rail to $6.5 billion — $1.5 billion more than the Albanese Labor Government — and deliver upgrades at Sunshine Station within the scope of the additional joint funding from the Coalition at Federal and State levels.

As a result, travel times will be cut for Wannon travellers accessing rail along the Ararat-Beaufort and Warrnambool-Colac lines who will change at Sunshine for rail direct to the airport.

Further positive infrastructure announcements will be made in coming days.

Member for Wannon Dan Tehan said the Coalition recognised Victoria’s urgent infrastructure priorities.

“Victoria is being let down by bad Labor Governments in Canberra and Melbourne,” Mr Tehan said.

“Redirecting Albanese’s 2.2 billion dollars into crucial infrastructure that serves all Victorians is part of the Coalition’s plan to get the state and country back on track.”
